  1. 1. Silica Gel should have moisture loss of 6-10% in bag packing. we take every care at our end to pack fully activated Silica Gel.

Fungus formation on leather articles and its prevention

1. Why fungus forms on leather.

Leather articles contains its own moisture and also hygroscopic due to which they tends to absorb moisture. if moisture content exceeds certain limit increased microbial activity starts. Thereby mold, mildew and fungi etc. start forming.

2. Damage due to fungus.

  • Decomposition of leather.
  • Mechanical weakening of leather.
  • Sheen of leather destroyed and its disfigures.
  • Bad smell.
  • The fungus also has health hazards on human beings of bacterial infection.
  • Sheen of leather destroyed and its disfigures.
  • Rejection of leather consignment and losses.

3. Criteria of fungus prevention.

Experiment are shown that if initial moisture content in leather is around 10% and if it is stored in proper dehumidified condition of 40-45% RH then fungus formation can be prevented. Silica Gel is a product which adsorbs moisture and is widely used in packing of leather articles to attain such dehumidified conditions.

4. Solution for fungus prevention.

  • First of all it should be ensured that leather articles should not be contain more than appx. 10% moisture.
  • Then leather articles are to be packed with silica gel pouches according to their sizes and packing instructions are to be strictly followed properly which is given below
  • If initial moisture content in leather is more than desired level more silica gel pouches should be used so that it can adsorb excess moisture.
  • Purpose of use of silica gel is to adsorb moisture from surrounding air so that atmosphere around leather articles is dehumidified so that fungus is not allowing to form.
  • During rainy season moisture content in air is very high as much as 100% RH and leather articles also contains high percentage of moisture, care must be taken during packing with silica gel pouches without much exposure to the air otherwise moist air will decrease the activity of silica gel. many of the leather goods exporters are using more silica gel during rainy season because of the above factors.

5. Packing Instructions

  • First put the article in an unpunched pp/polythene/plastic bags and make such sufficient number of the article ready.
  • We supply the silica gel pouches in sealed poly packets,open the poly packets and put desired quantity of silica gel pouches immediately with the leather articles.
  • The carton with bigger poly should be ready before hand and the above article so packed as above be put into the bigger poly and close and seal the cartons.

    The idea is to give minimum exposure of our Silica Gel pouches to the air otherwise it will adsorb moisture from the air and its effectiveness will be much reduced.

  • Recommendation of use of Silica Gel with leather articles in dry climate.

    • For wallets and similar size use 1 gm.
    • For article little bigger than wallets use 2 gm.
    • For article of size 8" x 10" use 5 gm.
    • For artiles of size 12" x 15" use 10 gm.
    • For shoes use 2 pcs. of 2 gm.

EU Ban On Dimethyfumarate (DMF) – Not Silica Gel Sachets

The chemical dimethylfumarate (DMF) (CAS No. 624-49-7) has been used by some producers as a biocide to kill moulds that may cause furniture, shoe leather or other leather products to deteriorate during storage and transportation in a humid climate. A velour toy has also been recalled in France allegedly due to the present of DMF.

Placed in sachets and fixed inside the furniture or added to the footwear boxes or other product packaging, DMF evaporates and impregnates the leather, protecting it from moulds. However, it has been found to affect consumers who were in contact with the products, causing painful skin irritation and in some cases acute respiratory troubles. Therefore the EU Commission have concluded that DMF is hazardous to health and banned any new product containing DMF from entering the market, under Article 13 of the General Product Safety Directive (2001/95/EC).

DMF should not be confused with silica gel (often used in sachets as a desiccant for protecting products from the effects of humidity and damp conditions) which physically absorbs water vapour, produces no chemical reaction, by products or side effects and is therefore considered safe to use.

From 1 May 2009 products containing more than 0.1mg DMF per kg of product or part of the product should not be placed on the market. Products already placed on the market are to be withdrawn and disposed of and recalled from consumers. Consumers are to be informed of the risk posed by such products.

Members are recommended to check with their suppliers that no anti-mould sachets containing DMF are, or have been, included with their products during transit.
